Portland East - A grey day and forecast did not go according to plan.

It was a strong N.E. occasionally E.N.E. and sadly got stronger. The N.E. T.O. is extremely technical and difficult.

Tim got to Portland Bill and I managed to land eventually at what appears to be a "new" T.O.

Great day at Portland East for my Maiden Flight. Long drive to see Russell flying solo. I got to T.O. and Russell landed with very cold hands to give me a good briefing. I had a classic time with some small thermals along the way to gain 550' above T.O. The Site Guide is right it is a very technical Site. We ended the day enjoying a hot drink at the Heights to celebrate.

Report by Roy Menage

The forecast looked promising so, hearing that the sun was out in Swanage, I hot-footed down to Portland West. It was very light on takeoff but after a few attempts, I managed to get off with guidance from Gary Pocock and Russell. The air was nicely buoyant and Russell and Gary wasted no time in joining me. Height gains were quite good initially but then the lift turned off quite quickly. Russell top landed but neither Gary nor I were able to get quite enough height to get in safely. After several attempts, I decided to cut my losses and land on the promenade. Russell very kindly retrieved us. I was very glad to have flown there for the first time.

Not bad for a Sunday afternoon in January! Thanks to Russell for the photos of me. Photos of Gary, Russell and cliffs by me

Report by Gary Pocock

Portland East - On arrival the wind seemed surprisingly light but Russell and I felt like there was just enough to fly with the smallest of occasional white caps showing on the water. By the time I'd clipped in and finally got my risers sorted the wind had dropped further and I was having to bury the brakes just to keep the wing over my head. I wasn't happy about taking off in these conditions with no real bottom landing. We waited and Jason joined us. We continued to curse the seeming lack of wind even though it was a beautiful day. There eventually seemed like a very slight improvement and Jason decided to give it a go. He managed a surprisingly good height gain given the wind strength. Needless to say I took off next as my wing was unpacked and ready to go and with a bit of help from Russell I finally got airborne, Russell followed shortly after. The lift was surprisingly good given that the wind strength on t/o seemed so low. I had about three quarters of an hour in the air my first flight since early October. It was really smooth with some thermals in front of the aerial. After a while the wind seemed to get a bit lighter with a little south in it. Height gains were less and with cold hands I opted to land, glad of getting my feet of the ground at last.

Portland West at its best for the second flyable day of 2017. Maiden Castle provided some aviation yesterday and today Portland in the sun with NW-WNW 12-14mph and thermic. An enjoyable day with Rusty, Elvis, Mike, Trevor, Mark, Paul and Ian as ground control!
