Report from Portland West

An overcast, damp day with grey skies.

Portland Wind Data showing potential flight. I arrived alone and thought it doable and launched could not get much above 60'ATO. Then after 30 mins it was 20'ATO so landed on the Spur. Ben H rang to say he was at launch and 5 mins later he sailed past saying it was picking up. Hurrah, launched into a stronger breeze and enjoyed some solid airtime. By the time others had arrived it was too strong on launch at Priory Corner, landing was fine and that was it for the day.

Top tip, this is not a Site for Low Air-timers or Red Ribbons, the Site Guide is very clear, it is Pilot Recommended.

Report from Portland West

0830 1 degree C on Take Off Brrrr.

0900 in the air and only 20' above the cliffs? Soon joined by 4 others then five then six all doing figures of eight to stay in the air. Fingers starting to feel very cold, landed changed to heated gloves and suddenly the sea thermals were drifting through. These allowed height gains to 299.92Ms ( just for Grant) or 984' for those used to imperial measurements. We were exploring all over Fraggle Rock and along Chesil Beach. Then about 1100 it all died off. These conditions are only experienced once or twice a year at Portland West so we struck lucky in between the storms. Thanks to John Wref (Condors) for some of the photos.

A couple of photos from Portland West today taken by Elvijs Ungar.

Long time since a Hanglider took off at Priory Corner.
